The Art and Architecture

of Thailand

Our June 19 meeting promises to be very interesting and informative. Our own Ernie Pick will tell us about his recent travels to Thailand and the art and architecture of that colorful country.

Ernie developed an interest in art during his college days at Yale University. In the corporate world, he continued his artistic creativity in packaging design, development and engineering areas of cosmetics, foods, medical devices and pharmaceuticals. During this time he developed an interest in sculpture and exhibited his works in both Connecticut and New York City.

In retirement, he pursued photography and digital painting. He taught photography at Miami Dade College as well as on cruise ships for six years which provided the opportunity to travel to many exotic locations around the world.

Join us on Tuesday, June 19 at 1:00 to hear Ernie’s fascinating talk and slide presentation of The Art and Architecture of Thailand. Refreshments will be served at 12:30.

Bhavna Mehta

The Art Lovers Club is thrilled and honored to have as our guest artist on May 15, Bhavna Mehta, the celebrated artist who draws with a knife and paints with thread, cutting and sewing paper to tell visual stories. Her work is based on the idea that everything is connected. Starting with a single sheet of paper, she cuts out shapes to contour the story around a central character or intention. Figures, botanical motifs, symbolic elements and words form the connections within and beyond the piece. The intricacy of the connections is essential for the piece to hang together. Her talk is entitled Paper Stories.

Bhavna Mehta has exhibited widely in San Diego and Southern California. She is the recipient of the Artists Activating Communities grant from the California Arts Council (2017) and the Creative Catalyst grant from the San Diego Foundation (2015). She has won multiple awards in juried shows and collaborates with artists making public art using paper as a design medium. She has engineering degrees from both her native India and the United States and worked for many years as a software engineer before turning to art.

The meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 15 in the Mykonos Room with refreshments being served at 12:30. For more information please contact Susan Pick at 760-305-8907 or Irene Michelson, 760-842-1949.
